History: The THRU Project began in July of 2011 as a service project of Unity of San Antonio. Co-founded by current board member, Steve O’Donnell and Director, Elaine Hartle, the Unity of San Antonio community rallied around the plight of youth aging out of foster care in San Antonio and the woeful number of social workers assigned to assist these youth. The critical need for a permanent organization that will provide volunteers to be the connection from the youth to the services provided by social agencies became the reality that is the THRU Project.
With offices opening in mid-October of 2011 and agency partnerships in hand, the THRU Project began partnering former foster youth with their new mentors in June of 2012. In 2014, THRU Project became a separate entity, gaining it’s own 501(c) (3) nonprofit status.
The mission of THRU Project is to help youth overcome the challenges of growing up in the foster care system by providing guidance, support and advocacy in order to prepare them for life after foster care.
THRU Project works specifically with young adults who have been in the foster care system at any point in their life. THRU Project works with young adults ages 16 years old and up (no age limit) and we have worked with youth as young as 14 years old. If the young adult wants a mentor we will introduce them to one. Its male to male, and female to female (advisor/youth).
