Upbring is a leading Texas-based, faith-inspired nonprofit organization and one of the state' largest children's services providers. In Texas, our life-giving programs include foster care, adoption, residential treatment centers, supervised independent living, educational services and community services. We also deliver disaster relief services in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.
Upbring programs are strategically located across the state, and they serve children from every region.
Two programs are located in San Antonio: Foster In Texas and BeREAL.
Foster In Texas (FIT) In 2016, our 14 FIT offices across the state connected nearly 2,000 children with loving foster families. We are always looking for families willing and able to care for children of all ages, ethnicities and needs.
BeREAL Many young adults aging out of foster care have no home, no family and nowhere to turn. Through Upbring BeREAL, we walk alongside these young men and women as they grow into independent, successful adults. Upbring maintains BeREAL programs in San Antonio, Austin and San Marcos. In 2016, our BeREAL program served 123 young men and women, 13 in San Antonio.
BeREAL participants benefit from affordable housing and assistance for food, clothing and other essentials. They also learn critical life skills such as budgeting, leveraging community resources, building permanent relationships with caring adults, and achieving their career and educational goals.
The organization’s roots date to 1881, when a compassionate group of Lutherans founded the first Lutheran social ministry in Louisiana to care for children orphaned by plagues that swept through the state. In 1926, like‐minded Lutherans established a home for widows and orphans in Round Rock, Texas. In January 1993, the two agencies merged to become Lutheran Social Services of the South. In 2015, we rebranded as Upbring. Upbring offers children’s services in Texas, as well as disaster relief services in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
