Bridge Builders Ministry
H.I.S. BridgeBuilders-San Antonio is a movement of God uniting Christians across cities to transform urban communities through education, health, employment, and spiritual development for the glory of God. The organization is a 501 (c) (3). The ministry was established more than 10 years ago in San Antonio. The work is centered on the near east side in the Wheatley Courts (East Meadows) area of the city. The work in this area is now 12 years old.
During these years we have worked in an apartment of the Wheatley Courts Housing Development. This apartment has been demolished in preparation for the rebuilding of this portion of our city under the HUD Choice grant. The BridgeBuilders-San Antonio’s children’s work is now in our new building at 339 Gabriel. We provide after school mentoring and homework support and computer access for the children of the neighborhood. During the summer, we have a reading program to encourage the children to improve their reading, writing, and comprehension skills. In addition to one full time worker and 6 part-time employees, this work is supported by a small army of volunteers from dozens of different churches.
We also provide at least one Vacation Bible School during the summer. We have a character building and life skills training class for adult and younger women to help them establish decision-making skills and ultimately to develop attitudes which will help them in their homes, and hopefully on future job sites. We have provided medical screening, vision testing, small job training activities, and monthly neighborhood-wide events. At these larger events, we provide clothing, live Christian music, and the presentation of the gospel.
Last year there were 117 professions of faith. Seasonally, we provide back packs and school supplies, Thanksgiving food baskets, Christmas gifts, and other special items as needed by the neighborhood. We work with the Eastside Promise Neighborhood (EPN), the United Way, the Choice Initiative, the principal of the local elementary school (Booker T. Washington), and the San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA). At least 15 different churches have provided supplies and/or volunteers for the work that we do. The Children’s Hunger Fund provides boxes of food to us for distribution in the neighborhood.
