Christian Assistance Ministry is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for the wellbeing of those with great need facing crisis. CAM was founded in 1977, by nine downtown San Antonio churches to leverage resources, provide help where there is a gap in service and care for the wellbeing of anyone in need. CAM is now supported by 72 member churches, local foundations, individual contributions, “in-kind” donations and a weekly volunteer force of 250. CAM services are administered at 2 donated locations. CAM’s mission is to share the love of Christ by providing immediate assistance and encouragement to people in crisis.
CAM acts much like an “emergency room” of social services by meeting client’s immediate physical and emergent needs, then links clients to long term community resources. Often CAM partners with community based organizations (such as Haven for Hope, Center for Healthcare Services, Bexar County, University Health Systems) to help clients fill out applications, match dollars, leverage resources or provide one component needed so that the client is able to access other services. Like an emergency room, CAM requires no appointment, has no demographic or location requirements and meets the most vital needs of the client (that day) and then provide referrals to long term help. Most of the time the wellbeing of our clients is hindered by enormous stress, mental and physical health issues, diagnosed disabilities, age, homelessness, poverty, lack of food, and resources. CAM provides food, clothing, prescription assistance, ID recovery/birth certificates (vital for help with housing, Medicaid, employment), financial assistance to those facing eviction or disconnection of utilities, a safe and secure place to receive mail (disability checks and prescriptions) and transportation to medical appointments or work.
